View of Unkai (Sea of Clouds) from the Unkai Terrace at Hoshino Resort Tomamu

Travel Idea by Dove Tsubaki, 9th September 2014

The Unkai Terrace at Hoshino Resort Tomamu is the place to view the "sea of clouds" from mid May to late October each year. Note that the natural phenomenon happens only about half the time during the period. The likelihood of occurrence tends to be higher during summer (July - September). Visit just before dawn to catch sunrise, which is beautiful and sort of a consolation prize if the unkai doesn't happen. A gondola at the ski slopes of Hoshino Resort Tomamu carries visitors up to the Unkai Terrace (1900 yen round trip).
