Let me introduce you to Gunkanjima (Battleship Island) in Nagasaki.
It’s a man-made island about 40 minutes by boat from Nagasaki Port (18.5 km away), and it used to be an undersea coal mine! The whole island is surrounded by seawalls, and there are rows of Japan’s first high-rise concrete apartment buildings. It looks like a battleship—specifically the Tosa—which is how it got the nickname “Battleship Island.”
今回は長崎にある「軍艦島」をご紹介します 🚢
ここは長崎港から船で約40分（18.5km）にある人工の島で、昔は海底炭鉱として使われていました！島全体が防波堤で囲まれていて、日本初の高層鉄筋コンクリート造の集合住宅が並んでいます。その姿が戦艦「土佐」に似ていることから「軍艦島」と呼ばれるようになったんです。
Back in its heyday around 1960, over 5,300 people lived there, making it the most densely populated place in Japan at the time. The island had everything—schools, a hospital, a movie theater, even a pachinko parlor. People could live their whole lives without leaving the island!
最盛期の1960年頃には、5,300人以上が暮らしていて、当時は日本一の人口密度を誇っていました。島の中には学校や病院、映画館、パチンコホールまであり、島から出なくても生活が完結できる場所だったんです。
The mine closed in 1974, and everyone moved out, turning it into a ghost island. But in 2015, it was recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site 🎉
1974年に炭鉱が閉山して、住民が島を離れ、無人島となりましたが、2015年にはユネスコの世界文化遺産に登録されました🎉
You can visit on a cruise, but landing isn’t always guaranteed—it depends on the weather and safety conditions. Even if the sea looks calm, the captain might cancel landing if it’s not safe. We were super lucky and actually got to go ashore!
今ではクルーズで観光できますが、必ずしも上陸できるわけではありません。天候や安全条件によって判断され、海が穏やかに見えても、安全に上陸できないと船長が判断すれば中止になります。私たちは運よく上陸できました！
